<p style="margin-bottom:0px"><span1>D</span1>uring our trip to Brimfield a few weeks earlier, I purchased two vintage Westclox Big Ben De Luxe alarm clocks. These weighty tickers were made over 80 years ago by the Western Clock Company in La Salle, Illinois. Unfortunately, I once again broke rule #4 from our <strong><a href="http://www.vintageandflea.com/home/2012/5/15/5-tips-for-shopping-flea-markets-garage-sales-and-antique-sh.html">how to shop vintage post</a></strong>. I spent a total of $60 on the clocks, without knowing what their real value is, because I was drawn to their very distinctive faux texture. Luckily for me, I was able to accurately date each piece and guesstimate their worth based on the feature that compelled me to buy these lovely time keepers.</p>

<p><span2>T</span2>he first version of this alarm clock came out in 1927 but was only available in a polished nickel finish with a either a white or black non-luminous dial. The "crackle" Big Bens (shown above) were manufactured during 1928 – 1930 in three different colors; old rose, green, and blue. Each shade was layered over a gold painted finish to create the faux distressed look. During the first six months of production, the crackle Big Bens had white paper faces. However, during the second half of 1928, the gold paper non-luminous dials were produced. Based on this bit of information, I was able to date the green clock shown above to this time period or later. In 1929 the gold luminous dials, as shown on the old rose clock above, were introduced. Even so, that was not enough information to confirm that my clock was made in 1929 until I discovered that in 1930 the word “De Luxe” was no longer printed on the alarm clock's face. Now I can pinpoint that the green clock was made most likely in 1928, but the old rose clock was definitely made in 1929. But what are these mechanical wonders worth?
</p>

<div id="gallery"><ul><li><a href="#x"><b><i><img src="storage/clockstwopost_blue-crackle.jpg" alt=""></i><span><strong>blue crackle alarm clock</strong></span></b><img src="storage/clockstwopost_blue-crackle.jpg" /></a></li></ul></div>

<p><span2>W</span2>ith vintage and antiques, condition is everything -- within reason. There are a few cosmetic issues that will not affect the value of these alarm clocks. The bases on these tickers are known to crumble so a few chips and minor nicks are acceptable. Furthermore, it is normal to see wear to the paint around the windings and knobs. With that said, a crackle finish Big Ben that works, but has seriously cosmetic issues, is valued at $15 -$30. The same clock in good cosmetic condition that does NOT work may fetch a few more dollars simply because it is pretty. However if you have a clock that looks good plus works the value jumps up to $200. But buyer beware- there are reproductions of this clock on the market. If the clock does not feel weighty and if it has any plastic parts (it should be all metal with a glass plate over the dial) it is a fake.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0px"><span2>N</span2>ow all I need is the blue crackle alarm clock to compete my set!</p>

<span1>If</span1> it wasn't for Robert Moog's, Moog Synthesizer, I might not have had the desire to play music outside of middle school where I was one of the geeks who opted for a spot in the band over a highly coveted place in the school choir. Back when I was a wee one, if you had a melody in your head, you can plunk it out on an electronic keyboard (mine was a Casio) and viola; you either sounded like <strong><a href="http://youtu.be/uPudE8nDog0" target="_blank">The Human League</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLa8Br569gA" target="_blank">Ross from Friends</a></strong>.
</p>

<p>
<span2>S</span2>ynthesizers and electronic gadgets like drum machines, democratized music, meaning you did not have to be a graduate of Julliard or have 10,000 hours of guitar lessons under your belt to in order to make music. It inspired gazillons of kids like me back in the day to form bands and get out there and play. And play I did, however, my weapon of choice was the drums but we did have a keyboardist who owned a broken down Moog he saved from the trash. Our most memorable performance was at <strong><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXXS5vDCk6A" target="_blank">The Pyramid Club NYC</a></strong></strong>, when it was still actually cool.

<p><span1>L</span1>ast year we spent Memorial Day Weekend at The Rhinebeck Antiques Fair, which is now in it's 36th year. You won’t find rusty gold at this event. The show is known for featuring outstanding folk art, Americana, and country finds, with a smattering of mid-century furniture, and Asian inspired antiques. Since this is a retail show you won't find many stellar deals, but it is a fun event to window shop. At the very least, you will learn a few new things about American antiques. Afterwards, you can spend your money at one of the many local garage and yard sales in the area. <em>Memorial Day Weekend: Saturday 10-5 , Sunday 11-4. <p><span1>T</span1>he week before last, we attended the Brimfield Antique Show, the largest vintage and flea event on the east coast. It rained the first four days of the event, so we left our cameras in the hotel most of the time. Luckily, the weather did not seem to affect sales. Most of the dealers we spoke to claim the show was a huge success. That fact could be easily verified -- most of our favorite vendors' tents were picked clean the day their field opened. The sun finally graced us with her presence the last two days of the show, so we broke out our cameras. However, since most of the primo loot was gone, we barely took any photographs. We are especially disappointed that we never got to shoot the Collectors Weekly booth where we meant Ben Marks, the site’s senior editor. He treated us to <strong><a href="http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/55014-were-here-at-brimfield-with-t-shirts" target="_blank">two fabulous t-shirts</a></strong> made just for the Brimfield show. Psssst, here is a tip, if you have any antique items you cannot identify or just want to show off, you can post your stuff on <strong><a href="http://www.collectorsweekly.com/answer-desk/how-does-show-and-tell-work" target="_blank">Collectors Weekly</a></strong>.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0px"><span2>W</span2>e will be featuring all of our prized purchases from the Brimfield Antique Show over the next few weeks. In the meantime, you can visit a few of our favorite vendors' websites: </p>

<p><span1>W</span1>e need your help identifying our latest prized find. If you read yesterday's post, <strong><a href="http://www.vintageandflea.com/home/2012/5/15/5-tips-for-shopping-flea-markets-garage-sales-and-antique-sh.html" target="_blank">"5 Tips for Shopping Flea Markets, Garage Sales, and Antique Shows"</a></strong>, I need to come clean. I broke rule #4. I purchased a vintage item I knew nothing about at the Brimfield Antique Show, and it was priced a little out of my comfort zone. I could not help myself. I fell in love the moment I saw the stark white, bald, and blue eyed bust shown here. I was compelled to adopt her so I figured sometimes, rules are meant to be broken.</p>

<p><span2>O</span2>riginally the bust was priced at $300. The dealer who sold the item to us, <strong><a href="http://www.nhada.org/dealerDetails.cfm?bus_ID=124&refer=alpha" target="_blank">Joshua Steenburgh</a></strong>, is known for selling vintage and antique folk art. After we spotted the bust, we stalked his booth for three days trying to get a better price. During this time, I was a little concerned that no one else wanted “her” for $300 but then again most people may not consider the bust folk art.</p>

<p><span2>D</span2>uring our third visit to Steenburgh's booth we did not see the bust. Feeling completely defeated I walked away to grab a burger. Luckily, Jack the other half of Vintage and Flea decided to find out if the bust was really sold. “She” was not -- the dealer just packed her away. We purchased the bust for $200.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0px"><span2>N</span2>ow what the heck did we buy? Her eyes are glass and look eerily real. She appears to have been cast from a mold. If you turn the bust upside down you can see tool marks inside the head. On the back of the bust are hand written letters and numbers: PB 1502. Was she a head for a giant doll? A mannequin? An art piece? Who knows! If you have any ideas, please share!</p>

<p><span1>W</span1>e spent all of last week at the Brimfield Antique Show, the largest outdoor vintage and antique event in the Northeast. For those who have never been, the show includes 20 independent fields. Each venue opens on different days, and runs for various periods of time. This gives shoppers, especially early birds, several opportunities to get first dibs on fresh merchandise. When presented with a dizzying amount of great finds, it is important to have a shopping strategy in place so you don’t over spend or catch a bad case of buyer's remorse. Below are five simple rules we abide by that helps us stay on track when we shop huge shows like Brimfield, in addition to flea markets, antique shows, and garage sales.</p>

<div class="alignleft" style="width:900px; margin-left:10px; margin-bottom:0px; clear:right">
    <p><strong><span2>F</span2>ive simple rules:</strong></p>

    <div style=" padding-left:5px; margin-top:-10px">
        <ol type="1"  style="margin-bottom:0px">
            <li><strong><u>Need Versus Want:</u></strong> We start every picking adventure with a list of things we need and a second list of things we want. Doing so allows us to prioritize purchases. This also helps us determine if we should deviate from our original plan and ditch the lists when we spot something amazing and unexpected. </li>
            <br />
            <li><strong><u>Setting a Budget:</u></strong> Nothing sucks the thrill out of the hunt like over paying, especially if you plan on flipping an item. Research how much items on your want and need list are selling for online. Don’t depend on one source; get the big picture on how much people are willing to spend on a particular item. You can do this by comparing prices found on eBay, Etsy, and traditional online retailers.</li>
            <br />
            <li><strong><u>Passing Inspection:</u></strong> Don’t regret your purchase later because you did not notice a hole, tear, chip, or other signs of damage. Keep a flashlight and even a magnifying class handy so you can examine items carefully before you buy.</li>
 			<br />
            <li><strong><u>Be In The Know:</u></strong> Purchasing a pricey vintage item strictly on impulse without knowing exactly what it is can lead to disappointment later, especially if you are spending out of your comfort zone. Always ask the seller what he / she knows about an item’s history, then do your best to verify the information they provided before you fork over cash. Google Search and Worthpoint.com, have become important tools in our arsenal when it comes to evaluating what an item actually is. A good example is a James Dean “death mask” we almost purchased for hundreds of dollars. Thanks to our <strong><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/worthpoint-research-value/id480248429?mt=8" target="_blank">Worthpoint.com phone app</a></strong>, we discovered that the piece in question was actually a poorly executed reproduction of a James Dean "life mask". The retail value of the repro was under $40.</li>
            <br />
            <li><strong><u>Make Contacts:</u></strong> If you like a dealer, vendor, or even a garage sale host- make sure you stay on their radar. Exchange email information and let them know what kind of stuff you are on the hunt for. Afterwards, periodically check in with these folks so you stay top of mind. </li>
        </ol>

<p><span1>F</span1>irst off, apologies, the Vintage and Flea team has been MIA this week. Here is the deal, every May we make the pilgrimage to the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts. As much as we love attending the show, it is hard work.

<p><span2>E</span2>veryday we get up at around 3:30AM so we can get to the fields by dawn. By the time 4PM comes around we are getting ready to pick a place for dinner and by 7 PM we are tucked in bed in our jammies reading a book or watching TV. Next week we promise to share all of the details of our visit to what some consider the biggest and hottest antique show in the USA. The photo above was taken on Tuesday, day one of the week long show at 5:00AM. We have taken many more photos and bought a few super cools things since this image was taken. We will follow up with our first official report on Monday. So have a fab weekend, we will catch up soon!

In case you didn't know, perky Good Morning America correspondent and former Antique Roadshow host <strong><a href="http://www.laraspencer.net/site/whats-new.html" target="_blank">Lara Spencer,</a></strong> is a full-on dumpster diving junker. This book shares Spencer’s passion for what she calls “sale-ing” -- shopping garage sales, thrift stores, and estate sales. The fun does not stop there. She divulges her secrets for bargain hunting, explains how to restore what you buy, plus tells you where to place your great new find in your home. And if you are a fan of comedian Kathy Griffin, you are in for a real treat. The book features her home which Spencer refurbished and decorated. </p>

Author Maureen Stanton shares one dealer's journey finding and selling antiques. The book is full of detailed information concerning the world of antiques and fauxtiques plus shares stories about every dealer's elusive dream of finding that one item that will make them rich. Much of the book takes place at the Brimfield Antique Show so this is a must read for any fan of this thrice yearly New England event. </p>

<span1>E</span1>tsy rules. Sure we all like to poke fun of the site (hello <strong><a href="http://www.regretsy.com/" target="_blank">Regretsy</a></strong>), but it is stuff like the following that keeps us coming back to the online marketplace on a regular basis.</p>

<p>
<span1>Y</span1>es, it is possible to hear contemporary tunes played on a vintage gramophone, or at least through its horn. <strong><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/ReAcoustic" target="_blank">ReAcoustic</a></strong> has unplugged the traditional music dock by creating acoustic speakers for modern music devices without the use of batteries or electricity. Simply place your iPhone in the slot to hear your tunes in living vintage sound.</p>

<p>
<span1>I</span1> heart this <strong><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/96427804/shabby-chic-vintage-elevated-wood-wooden?ref=sr_gallery_30&ga_search_query=repurposed&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=vintage" target="_blank">vintage wooden crate pet feeder</a></strong>. First is it elevated so it is not just sitting parked on the floor. Next it does double duty as a puppy toy box. Just open the top to store a few of your pet's items. Lastly, the wood is treated with a non toxic water resistant coating that protects the crate's paint and patina.</p>

<span1>I</span1> am a sucker for vintage cast iron so the moment I saw this repurposed <strong><a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/95738333/cast-iron-side-table-repurposed?ref=sr_gallery_35&ga_search_query=repurposed&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=vintage" target="_blank">Victorian water heater stand table</a></strong>, my heart went pitter pat. This freshly painted item is beautifully detailed and is marked, "<strong><a href="http://www.waltergrutchfield.net/monitor.htm" target="_blank">Monitor Iron Works, NY</a></strong>". Table Measures 22.25 inches tall and the top has an 18 inch radius.</p>
